SEO and technical quality, in the same scan

While we check accessibility, we also check the basics of SEO and technical quality. Many improvements overlap: a good title or a working link helps everyone, and search engines too.

SEO

  • Pages without a title or description, and duplicate titles or descriptions.
  • Pages without a main heading (h1).
  • Canonical tags that point to the wrong URL.
  • Inconsistent hreflang tags between languages.
  • Pages with noindex, and a robots.txt that blocks the whole site.
  • Chains of more than two redirects.
  • Broken internal links.

Technical quality

  • JavaScript errors and error messages in the console.
  • Resources that fail to load: images, stylesheets or scripts.
  • Mixed content: HTTP resources on HTTPS pages.
  • Invalid HTML and obsolete elements.
  • Third-party cookies.
  • Cookies set before the visitor accepts the cookie banner.

Cookies before consent

When each page loads, we record the cookies that are set before anyone has touched the banner. Then we check the banner once per website and close it so we can carry on scanning.

If an analytics or advertising tool sets cookies before the visitor gives consent, you will see it as a quality issue. This is a technical check: the legal assessment of your cookie policy is a matter for your legal advisers.

Broken links without false positives

We check each link with a lightweight request and, if that fails, with a normal one. We make at most one or two requests at a time per server and respect the Retry-After header.

If a server blocks us or presents an anti-bot challenge, we mark the link as “unverifiable”, not as broken. We keep the results for 24 hours so that we do not repeat requests.

How we score SEO and quality

Each module has its own score from 0 to 100: 100 × e−D/30. D adds up the weight of each problem multiplied by the proportion of pages it appears on, so a problem on every page weighs more than an isolated one.

Weights of SEO and quality problems
WeightSEOQuality
10noindex across the whole site, robots.txt that blocks everything, home page with a 5xx error—
7Missing title, broken internal link, wrong canonicalActive mixed content, JavaScript errors, non-essential cookies before consent
3Duplicate title or description, no description or no h1, more than two redirectsFailing resources, console errors
1—Invalid HTML, obsolete elements

The constants and weights are calibrated against a corpus of real Spanish online shops. The formula version is stored with every scan. See the full methodology.

A basic module, on purpose

The SEO and quality checks cover the essentials and focus on objective errors. They are not meant to replace a specialist SEO tool or an SEO audit.
